Stop Illegal Government Action

Help Free Prince William County from Illegal Government Action!

The Prince William Board of County Supervisors in Virginia passed a resolution on July 10, 2007 giving local law enforcement the right to ask for the immigration status of any person detained by police who they suspect is an undocumented immigrant. This resolution also seeks to block access to public services for undocumented individuals, stating that these individuals are an "economic hardship" and cause "lawlessness" in the county.

The Board of County Supervisors has passed an illegal resolution that conflicts with the power reserved to Congress by the United States Constitution to pass laws regarding immigration. Like many, we share the concern that this Resolution, if gone unchallenged, will embolden other local governments to enact unconstitutional laws that empower untrained local officials to interpret federal immigration law and detain individuals based on such a determination. Such laws not only open the door to abuse and discrimination, but also frustrate and overburden federal efforts to enforce immigration laws. In the end, immigration is a national issue - local governments should not be able to set law on behalf of our entire country.

Fighting to Uphold the Constitution
Three groups are fighting to support the Constitution and fight against illegal actions by the government of Prince William County: the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund, Howrey LLP, and the Washington Lawyers' Committee.
